Lavender and Lace- Custom-Made Wedding Cake Trends for 2014
Alla Levin, Founder of The Cake Zone, rated as one of Florida's top 3 bakeries, tells us about the new and modern design concepts that have evolved in Wedding Cakes recently!
Gone are the days when heavy draping, lopsided cakes or rigid floral pieces were the talk of the town. We've entered a new era of modern sophistication, extreme customization and the ultimate in design flair.
It used to be that when you ordered a wedding cake, you picked from a number in a book. There were standard frostings, pre-assembled sugar bouquets and very few choices beyond stacked tiers, columns and plastic toppers. Today’s bridal couples want more. They want a cake that is just as unique and special as they are to each other.
When ordering a wedding cake, it’s important to let your designer know your expectations upfront. Be completely honest about your likes and dislikes. Share details about your relationship, how you met, the memories and customs that are important to you. Don’t forget to talk about allergy concerns or special dietary restrictions. Many bakeries specialize in special requests so never be afraid to ask.
Remember not everyone is a cake artist. While there is no doubt most bakeries want the very best for their brides, it is important to choose the bakery and designer that meets your specific needs. If your cake dreams are over-the-top and highly-customized, seek out a designer known for taking cakes to the next level.
Gold wedding cake was Inspired by a computer drawing made by the Bride, designers at the Cake Zone in Tampa Bay Florida were able to create a custom, one of-a-kind wedding cake complete with embossing and traditional piping.
The wedding cakes of 2014 are on trend to be more refined and more glam than ever before. Delicate lace, sheer silks, interesting textures and edgy colors are all the rage on the runway. Cake fashion often mirrors couture fashion; catwalk styles and cake styles are somewhat interchangeable.
Fondant is fabulous in 2014. As kids we loved to dip our fingers in the gooey buttercream frosting and, if we were lucky, mom let us lick the bowl clean! While not quite the picture you want for a wedding, it is a wonderful memory all the same. Fondant is an elegant way to give your wedding cake a custom and couture look. Cake designers are able to use it as a canvas, molding it into creative patterns and flowers, embossed heirloom designs and even sculptures that look exactly like a treasured piece of jewelry, a storybook, a sandcastle, a guitar, a wine barrel and more! Best of all, you don’t have to sacrifice your love of buttercream by choosing fondant. Ask your cake designer to hide some of your favorite gooey treat on the inside of the cake; truly the best of both worlds.
Don’t be afraid to show your artsy side! If you’re inspired by the edgier runway styles of 2014 including the jewel tones, crimsons, yellows and chevron themes, go ahead and go bold. This is your special day and your cake should be reflective of your special style. Modern designs, retro rewinds and bold colors can be executed with sophistication into a cake your guests will not soon forget.
Be one with nature in 2014. Lavender doesn't grow in well-groomed bunches. The stems vary in height and the buds are found in multiple shades of lavender. Nature is rarely uniform. Such should be the same for your cake style. Ask your designer to be free-form with elements like flowers and ribbon. Stems, leaves, branches and petals look so much more realistic when arranged in natural patterns or cascades.
Whether you follow the trends or set the trends, let your personality shine through. When you do, your wedding cake will be just as beautiful as you are on your special day!
