Candid Wedding Photography in India
“Indian Wedding Photography as a genre of photography has really come of age over the last few years. It’s come a long way from the traditional approach that was almost the norm as of a few years ago. Today, terms like documentary, candid & photojournalistic are being used almost too frequently, but they are an indication of this evolution.” says ace Indian Wedding photographer, Arjun Kartha.
myShaadi.in is a one of a kind platform that gives Candid Wedding photographers all over the country an opportunity to showcase their wedding portfolio. With an exclusive profile page dedicated to the photographer, it is an excellent platform for Indian wedding photographers to reach out to couples who seek their services.
myShaadi.in decided to speak with the array of professional photographers listed in the Gallery to get an insight into what exactly is ‘CANDID WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY’ and got answers to some common questions that couples might have.
The term 'candid' essentially means 'caught unaware'. It is that click which requires no preparation or posing on the part of the person, because the emotion itself is magnificent enough to be captured. So are couples really looking for Candid Wedding Photography? According to Arjun Kartha, “The demand is definitely huge and will continue to grow. With increased exposure due to travel and information, young couples are becoming more aware of the trends abroad and want the same standard of Candid Wedding Photography for themselves”.
Adding to this Avantika Meattle, a Delhi based Candid Wedding photographer says, “It should be something that they can share with friends and even if they see it many years down the line, they should be able to connect with the emotions of the occasion - typical old pictures were primarily just a record of events that did not capture this.”
So what is something ‘different’ and interesting that Candid Wedding Photography can offer to couples? Most of the photographers do something called a Pre Wedding Couple Shoot which is conceptualised and shot after a hard core discussion with the couple about their tastes and personalities. There is a specific location that is chosen, the attire of the couple is thought over, props are used and beautiful memories are made.
When we talk about 'additional benefits' being offered to the couple, Chennai based famous Candid Wedding Photographer, Amar Ramesh says that the choices are endless, and what is being offered can vary from photographer to photographer. Right from the option to get only soft-copies, online galleries, slideshows, wedding album, art work, DVDs, wedding films, photo booths.. the list goes on...
One of the most important and difficult tasks for a couple is on how to go about looking for a Candid Wedding Photographer. Again, a unanimous answer that comes from our Indian Wedding photographers is to go by ‘Word of mouth’ and ‘Social media’. myShaadi listed photographer Kishor Krishnamoorthi, recommends “Talking to friends that may have used a particular photographer for their wedding and getting a first-hand review of their experience, checking out the work of various photographers online and seeing if their style suits the couple's preferences, and of course, using wedding planning websites to compare ratings and reviews of photographers.”
Is there a checklist that couples should have when finalising on their wedding photographer? According to Milind Ketkar, “The most important point of all is the style & experience of the photographer who is going to actually shoot the wedding.” For this, the couple can check out the Past albums and works of the photographer. Both Arjun & Avantika point out that there needs to be a certain comfort level that the couple needs to share with the photographer for the pictures to turn out well.
On a more practical note, ensure that there are no 'hidden costs' and both parties are clear on the deliverables (i.e. digital copies only/albums/size/pages of albums) Introducing the photographer to important members of the family and close friends to make sure that they aren't missed out in the coverage!
At the end of the day, there’s a world of difference that a truly skilled candid wedding photographer can bring – in addition to a traditional person. Arjun Kartha puts it aptly that what couples can expect is a neatly woven story of their wedding in pictures. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words – and a photo of a bride shedding a tear during her vidaai, or a groom giving his bride a secret smile as the priest rattles off something complicated in saanskrit is something that will be immortal and priceless!
