Wedding Planner v/s Wedding Stylist .. who is right for me ?

Wedding Planner v/s Wedding Stylist

Indian wedding market seems to be on a permanent boom since some time now. The west have rightfully coined the term 'Big Fat Indian Wedding' for it, which is self explanatory. We spend no stone unturned to make our weddings larger than life. Girls dream since childhood of growing up and having a fairy tale wedding, where they feel like a princess and the arrangements are befitting a royal family.

Needless to add, this has led to mushrooming of several artists, performers, entertainers, service providers, decorators, caterers, coordinators, planners etc in the field of wedding who all claim to better than the last ones! This can be pretty confusing for the couple. It is recommended that one gets a planner and/or a stylist and the rest usually follows.

Most times there is some confusion between the two roles of a wedding stylist and a wedding planner (and no, most of them don’t look remotely like Jennifer Lopez), so here is an insight into understanding the difference between them, and the benefits that couples can get from choosing the correct one for their special day. Think of preparing for your wedding day like building a house. Now hiring a wedding planner is like hiring a builder or contractor. And hiring a stylist is like bringing an interior designer to the team. One is a basic requirement and other is what's sets your house/wedding apart from all others!

Planners are all about being organised; creating schedules, sourcing suppliers, managing budgets, assisting with contracts, venue management, coordinating the day itself… they think of everything you need to help create your dream wedding, and do everything in their power to make sure it runs smoothly on the day, remaining calm and being quick to think on their feet. A good planner is someone who is resourceful, knowledgeable, diplomatic, a good problem solver, someone who can give advice on correct vendors to choose, and who is available at all times to calm a stressed out bride and family.

Stylists, on the other hand, are all about “the pretty”. They keep up to date on trends; can create fresh design themes, come up with a suitable colour scheme, advise on venue and table décor, give guidance on the best places to source props and decorations, and are usually hired to help make a couples signature style, vision and personality to the table. They are the ones who provide the cutting edge to an event by providing the style needed. Most stylist prepare custom made decorations, favours, gifts and props from scratch exclusively for each couple.

Stylists make a wedding memorable and unique, as the products & ideas used are mostly exclusive. They are like those designer trousseaus which is hardly similar to anyone else. Often planners and stylist work together on projects, with their work clearly defined to ensure their work compliments each other.

Some planners in the wedding industry are also good stylists. They are at times capable of filling both roles, and being creative types they usually enjoy this side of the overall planning process also. However it’s not always the case, as most lack creative flair, genuine expertise and originality, or aren't able to share the couple's sense of style – and similarly a great stylist may lack the ability to negotiate on contracts and liaise with multiple suppliers in one day, as a planner.

For two such crucial roles in the whole wedding process, both planners and stylists are often overlooked yet inexpensive players in the industry. They are not a separate budget, instead are a part of your budget! Whilst couples will happily spend lakhs of rupees on other areas like singers, entertainers, caterers etc these wedding stylist “special value” professionals are often dismissed in favour of regular options.

So this is for all those couples for whom tenting, lighting, jodha-akbar sets and flowers are not enough and they need a certain class to their events. They consider styling to be the most important part of their wedding, with design and decorations chosen to reflect their personalities and incorporating meaningful little touches. And no...they are not expensive and even cater to middle class budgets!
