Gayatri & Shyam's Sri Lankan Tamilian Wedding by Amar Ramesh
From The Photographer
Being based in Chennai, I can safely say that I've attended every type of Tamil Wedding there is. So when Gayatri, a Sri Lankan Tamil, first called from Colombo to tell me about her upcoming wedding, I was extremely curious and eager to see how different (or similar) it would be. And that is why, in August this year, I packed my bags and headed on a 45-min short flight to Colombo from Chennai to find out for myself.
Both Gayatri & her groom, Shyam are Sri Lankan Tamilians and their wedding was held in typical Jaffna Tamil style. If like me you’re from Chennai, you’ll be pleased to see so many similarities. This can be seen in the exchange of garlands, the Thaali(the gold thread) and the Metti (toe-ring). But thankfully, Sri Lankans have some additional customs that are unique and beautiful. For example, the bride wears a veil and carries a bouquet when she enters the hall. Both are gorgeous additions to the bride's “look” as you'll see in the photos.
Since that wedding, I have shot another wedding in Sri Lanka and some things struck out. Sri Lankan weddings are REALLY organized! Everything seems to be going on smoothly without a glitch. Both times, the Bride was ready unusually early, which gave me a lot of time to work out some portraits. The make-up artists also seem to know exactly how to make the bride’s beauty shine, with the right amount of make-up. The guests at the wedding are well mannered and that creates an aura of calmness around the wedding. The décor was simple and sophisticated. Everything came together to make this wedding extremely memorable for me. I cant wait to go back to do more weddings there!
